Extemporaneous, from Latin ex tempore (“out of time”), refers to the construction of public discourse, which by the conditions with which it is delivered, it requires certain improvisation. The theory is often implemented in contexts that require certain adaptability to be able to respond successfully to its needs. In this way, contemporary cities as a natural space of revolutionary gazes will force a thoughtful but improvised approach that facilitates the resilient construction of another city.

In this context, this course is a formative proposal that articulates theory, critical thinking, and practice in a program based on collaborative and transdisciplinary practices. In this second edition of the course, we will focus on interventions around the body: the body as a space for learning and discovery, the body as a measure of space and time, the resilient body and the body as resistance. It is aimed at people from different fields of work and study (visual arts, dance, architecture, urbanism, anthropology, education, etc.) interested in the possibilities that contemporary arts offer when it comes to providing new ways of seeing, tools, and approaches for research about the city.

The program is developed during 3 practical sessions preceded by a theoretical introduction, in different spaces of Barcelona: Escocesa, La Caldera, and Virreina Center of the Image.

There are impensed spaces. Nature, the world, reality, life are spaces, in the broad sense of the term, that escape the thought. The body is one of those spaces that paradigmatically resist universal logic to what is forced from speeches that claim a total deciphering. What does this resistance consist of? And what does it emerge? We will address these questions from the concept of the Frauaness of the body without organs as a body of desire that leads us to a posthuman and radically material approach with aesthetic, ethical and political implications and that offers tools to consider a transformation of the environment in which it operates. We will base on the Spinoza presumption that “we do not know what a body is capable of” and we will try to put it to the test through a practice of body movement.

Resonant Body-ing: Cities Senses and Alterity

Workshop by Doerte Weig

How do you feel your body’s resonance with the environment? Do you feel easily connected, or is there a sense of disturbance in the relations? This workshop introduces fascia, our bodily connective tissue, largest sensory organ and key to our movement capabilities, as a way of attuning to the contemporaneous resonant materialities of people and places. Bringing together biomedical advances and theoretical approaches from New Materialism, Urbanism, and Anthropology, introduces how thinking through the materialities of fascia is a way to sense and explore alterity; resonating within our own bodies and within urban spaces. After some simple practical sensing exercises at La Caldera, we will leave the building to explore how fascial movements trace into and shape our daily mobilities and encounters, in public spaces co-created by intercultural and non-human others.

ITINERARIES OF PLEASURE AND SUBVERSION

Introduction by Andrea Corachan and Workshop by Sara Pons

From a series of audiovisual fragments ranging from videoactivism, film or advertising, Andrea Corachán proposes to investigate some of the routes and gestures with which our bodies perform the city, its history and what we consider culture. We will investigate how certain artistic and political movements are present at the time of reconfiguring the spaces we inhabit or cling to the skin when we dress and undress.

From the sharing of the observation of the videos proposed by Andrea, Sara Pons will propose us to transfer this content to different sensory dynamics based on the Body Weather technique* relocating the sensitive bodies, listening and reading what causes us the space, and how these are modified, how they are installed and how they are moved. Being outside, being inside.

*Body Weather is a practice that was born in Japan in the 70s from the experiences and sharing of Min Tanaka and Hisako Horikawa. It is a very complete training that deeply investigates the Body-Space connection; living space really as an extension to your body. It is the search for a versatile body, constantly changing as time itself… with an intimate, complex and infinite process, which breaks with hierarchies, inviting us to live incessantly to disappear and appear in a new body. BW is not just a Practice it is a creative knowledge in harmony with the invisible.

The Table. Elastic Practice

Workshop by Alina Ruiz Folini and Letícia Skrycky

This session closes the Extemporanous Cities II course, with which Proyecto TACTIL invites us to share the recipe and manufacture a material around a work table. They propose to us to create a space and time dilated where to enlarge the observation from the mixture, handling and transformation of elements. Located between a tutorial, a laboratory and a somatic session, this task without disciplinary borders serves as an excuse to create the intersection of making-thinking collectively. A practice to exercise the possibility where optics can become haptic.

Participants

Begonya Saez Tajafuerce is a professor of philosophy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Since 2001 she has conducted her research about identity from a contemporary perspective and, since 2005, she collaborates at the SGRCos i Textualitat Group (UAB). She focuses her research on the theoretical approaches to the body from a relational perspective, from an epistemological, ethical and political interest in reference to gender, sexuality and queer studies. Alícia Rodríguez Campi studied philosophy at the UAB and dance in Barcelona and London Contemporary Dance School The Place. She has worked as a dancer and rehearsal assistant with the Northern Dance Companhia of Portugal, as well as in other projects in England, Spain and Mexico. She is currently working as a dance teacher and she is pursuing the “a political ontology of dance” PhD at the UAB.

Andrea Corachán

Art mediator and cultural manager of Transductores. She has previously coordinated the program with cultural centers Limen, from the Catalan Institute of Anthropology (2011-2015) and has worked on projects on art, memory and public space in different areas of Barcelona –Finestres de la Memòria with the Observatori de la Vida Quotidiana, Interfícies of the Arts Santa Mònica with the Taller de Ficció or El Rec Comtal for the Fundació Jovent i Consorci Besós. She has published documentaries –En Femme, El oasis del Pastor, I moltes altres dones…– and has been part of the Costa24 performance team for audiovisual exhibitions at the MNAC and La Pedrera. She has also worked as a teacher in artistic education by theFundació Pedagògica el Brot and the Generalitat de Catalunya and has carried out research on documentary heritage and the director of the image and sound archive of the Consell Insular de Formentera. She is currently co-responsible of the L’Ordit de la Fabra i Coats with La Fundició program, she develops the project on memory of the Arnau Itinerant with Laberint Cultura and coordinates the Wikidones project at the La Bonne Women’s Culture Center.

Sara Pons

Choreographer, dancer and teacher, trained in classical, contemporary and flamenco dance at the Eulalia Blasi school; Theater, at the Nancy Tuñón School and; Circus in the school Circus Tangier. In 2006 the Butoh enters in her life learning Body Weather with Andrés Corchero, Hisako Horikawa, Frank Van de Ven, Ouguri, Constanza Brnic, Carme Torrent and Ricardo Mora, also Butoh with Yumiko Yoshioka, Imre Thorman, Juschka Weigel, Minako Seki, Valentin Tzin, Rhizome Lee (subbody Butoh School Himalayas). In 2008 she forms together with Ricardo Mora, the Cía. ElOtro, a multidisciplinary company (Clown, Dance, Music and Manipulation of Objects). Sara has worked with Cía. Malucada, Cía. Inuter, Colectivo No Apto (award for the best street performance of the Mercé festivities, Barcelona 1999) Cía. Demente (Brazil) with whom she has toured around Germany as the interpreter of the solo winner of the first choreography prize of the solos festival in Stuttgart “Always Look at The Sea” by Joaquín Sánchez. She currently works with Cía. MonsDansa (Nats Nus) with the shows Minimón and WabiSabi, which was scheduled for 3 weeks at the New Victory Theater in New York City (November 2016). She is dedicated to the realization of her solos, courses and workshops, collaborates as choreographic assistant in different projects including Ignacio Jarquin’s, in London, “La vida es la leche” by Melissa Scioscia and follows the investigation with new artistic approaches with Cía . ElOtro.

Doerte Weig

Doerte Weig’s fascination and aim is to uncover the different facets of human mobility, and how the physicality of movement relates to social-political change and urban transformation. She is a specialist on the nexus of bodies and mobilities and her experience builds on diverse research projects: with hunter-gatherers; dancers; movement meditation practitioners; castellers; bodyworkers; fascia specialists; and citizens. Doerte highlights how we cannot think the future of cities successfully without taking into account the physicality and intercultural sensoriality of our moving bodies; how we need to develop stronger links between Smart City technologies and creative community dynamics in the public space. To this aim, Doerte continues to build ‘movement research’ as a transdisciplinary and translocal research field, connecting science, society and the arts. Her current projects are co-creating a ‘Somatics Toolkit’ for researchers and designers with the University of Coventry (NCRM funded), and discovering the links between ancient environments, sound and psychoacoustics as a member of the ERC-project ‘ArtSoundScapes’ at the University of Barcelona.

Alina Ruiz Folini, Letícia Skrycky, and Luciana Chieregati

Alina Ruiz Folini (Argentina) and Leticia Skrycky (Uruguay) are performing artists and creators, currently living in Madrid. They have shared experiences of research and creation in different contexts, developing different projects and collaborations built on the desire to extend the encounter and deepen their interest in the practices they make-think they share. Proyecto TÀCTIL hosts the first stage piece in co-creation of the two artists with Luciana Chieregati (Brazil). They have presented their work at Leal.Lav (Tenerife), La Caldera (Barcelona), Center for Performance Research and Judson Church (US), JUNTA International Dance Festival (BR), NAVE (CL), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Festival MASA (Madrid), Teatro Solís (UY), among others. Alina is Director of Arqueologías del Futuro _International Festival of Performing Arts and Knowledge. She is also a dancer in Trilogía Antropofágica directed by Tamara Cubas (Uruguay). Leticia is a designer of Anthropophagic Trilogy as well as lighting designer and technical director of João Fiadeiro and Festival FIDCU (UY). Luciana is part of COLLETIVO QUALQUER together with Ibon Salvador. The three artists have taken the Master’s Degree in Scenic Practice and Visual Culture (UCLM – Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofía). They understand artistic research and collaboration as a political experience, when considering them as well, practices of resistance.
